EXPOSE AND BOND/IMPACTED TOOTH SURGERY

An expose and bond is a surgical procedure used to help bring the impacted teeth into the dental arch. During this procedure, a small bony window is surgically made to access the impacted tooth. A fixture (usually a gold chain) is carefully luted onto the impacted tooth. The orthodontist or dentist will then use this chain to apply gentle traction in order to pull it into alignment with the rest of the arch.

What is the best age for an expose and bond?

Usually, an expose and bond is best done during eruption of the teeth during the early to late teens. It becomes much more difficult to perform this procedure as the patient gets older and its success rates tend to decrease. However, there are many instances where expose and bond has worked beyond this age range and will be discussed with you during the consultation visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is an impacted tooth?

A: An impacted tooth is one that is stuck under the gum or bone and cannot come in on its own. Upper canines (eye teeth) are a common example.

Q: What does expose and bond mean?

A: The surgeon gently uncovers the tooth and attaches a small bracket to it. Your orthodontist then uses braces to slowly guide the tooth into place.

Q: Why does my orthodontist want this done?

A: Leaving an impacted tooth in place can lead to problems with nearby teeth and bite. Bringing it into position keeps the natural tooth when that is possible.

Q: Will my child be asleep?

A: We offer local numbing, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation and IV sedation. Sedation is given in our accredited surgical suites by our NDBA board certified surgeons. We will talk through the options with you and your child.

Q: What is recovery like?

A: Most patients have mild soreness for a few days and can return to school soon after. We give written aftercare instructions and work closely with your orthodontist.

Q: Does insurance cover it?

A: We accept most PPO plans and Denti-Cal. Coverage depends on your plan, so we cannot promise what it will pay, but we check your benefits before surgery. Financing is available through CareCredit, Cherry and LendingClub.
